Niche put together a list of the top places in Texas to raise a family, reports the Austin Business Journal. Only two Central Texas towns made the top 10: West Lake Hills at number one and Rollingwood at number two. Both cities scored high for being located in the highly ranked Eanes school district, but suffered on affordability measures.
If you are looking to raise your child in Westlake, many apartments have spectacular views and great amenities. In general, complexes have one-bedroom to two-bedroom units, with rents ranging from $1224 to $3714. Amenities usually include being located in the highly rated Eanes school district, views of Lake Austin and the 360 Bridge, billiards or movie rooms, and resort-style fitness centers and pools. Square footage ranges from around 780 to 1,700 square feet.
Rollingwood is a small city within a city, and doesn’t have any apartment communities within its boundaries. However, if you are looking to get close to Rollingwood, an apartment locator can help you find a great apartment nearby.
Other Austin-area towns made the top 30 on the list, including Brushy Creek at number 16. Brushy Creek is located West of 1-35, East of 183, and north of 45. It is in the highly rated Round Rock school district and is close to the Domain.
Rents for a one-bedroom in Brushy Creek range from $750 in an older complex to $1,022 in a newer community and $1,022 in an older complex to $1,514 in a luxury community for a two-bedroom. Some family-friendly three bedrooms are available, but usually go quickly. Amenities in the higher-end apartment complexes often include leash-free dog parks, attached and detached garages, and garden tubs with separate showers with glass surrounds.
The majority of Bee Cave apartment communities have one, two, and three bedroom plans available, with square footage starting at 660 and going all the way up to 1350 for 3 bedrooms. Most are newer because the area was developed within the last few years, and rent ranges from around $1100 to $2000 per month. In general, amenities include reserved covered parking, a social calendar with activities for residents, and hike and bike trails. Many apartments have hill country views, full-size washer and dryer connections, and granite counters in the kitchen and baths.
Leander ranked 21st on Niche’s list and is located around 183 south of 29. Residents here enjoy the small-town feel, highly ranked Leander school district, and proximity to the Metro Rail, which takes commuters into Austin. A Leander campus of the Austin Community College system is currently under construction.
Leander has lots of apartment options, including some with coveted private backyards, great for kids and dogs, and trail access to the Leander MetroRail station. One and two bedroom apartments are available at most communities, in general ranging from 670 to 1,100 square feet and from $960 to $1330. Many newer complexes have units with upgraded kitchens with granite counters and glass tile backsplashes, as well as wood-like floors in the living areas.
Rounding out Niche’s list is Round Rock, located on IH 35, north of 45 and south of 1431. Round Rock is now so much more than just the home of Dell Computer or a suburb of Austin, but is now beloved by residents for benefits like Round Rock Outlet shopping, baseball at the Dell Diamond, and award winning Round Rock ISD schools.
There are a lot of options when searching for an apartment in Round Rock. One bedrooms generally start at 639 square feet and $920, two bedrooms generally start at 1,148 square feet and $1,315, and three bedrooms are approximately 1336-1560 square feet and cost between $1597 and $1915, depending on location and unit finishes. Many communities are pet friendly with dog parks and have garage parking available. Some even have available golf course views! Other common luxuries include gourmet kitchens, often with breakfast bars or islands, ceramic tile in kitchens, entryways and bathrooms, and walk-in closet with organizational shelving.

Decorating your home is both a fun and challenging task. On the one hand, making your apartment a home is exciting and enjoyable, especially when you see everything coming together. But on the other hand, finding the right look, style, and price for the size and layout of your new apartment can be difficult.
At Apartments Now, we spend a lot of time travelling around Austin and getting to know this town in depth. Like most people, we like a good deal, and we enjoy making our homes look good. We are always on the lookout for nice spots to buy furniture and accessories for the home, and because of this, we feel we can offer a few of our insights and suggestions to decorate your apartment and make it look beautiful!
Local Second Hand Furniture Stores
One way to find high quality, and unique, pieces of furniture is to check out local second hand furniture and consignment stores. Fortunately, Austin is both hip and ‘weird’ enough of a town to have a wide selection of cool places to get some great deals on used furniture. Located on Burnet, It’s New To Me has been open since 1988. They offer a range of “funky, fun and elegant” furniture, and they are constantly getting new stuff into the inventory, so if you can always check in again to see something new. If you’re looking for something to make your place stand out and don’t want the ‘out-of-the-box’ look, then this is a great place to check out! The Home Consignment Center is another great spot that not only sells furniture, but also sells jewelry and accessories at good prices. They are right off MOPAC, near the Domain, and they carry mostly high end and luxury type items and pieces. Another place to check out is Design with Consignment, which not only carries a variety of furniture options, but also offers antiques, art, and collectibles. This truly is an Austin gem! Lastly, if you want to be able to browse through used and new furniture and get a wide selection of options, try Austin’s Furniture Depot. These folks are also located in the Burnet furniture area, and they offer eclectic to elegant furnishings, with enough choice to allow you to find something that can work for your apartment. And if you’re in the area, there really are a row of other furniture stores to check out; so you are almost certain to find what you are looking for!
Shopping from Home and Staying on Budget
But if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like to go out and spend a day shopping, then you can still find great stuff at great prices, all from the comfort of your home! Overstock is probably the first place you will want to check out. They sell almost everything, but their furniture section is pretty solid and they are almost constantly offering deals and sales. Shipping is free on most orders over $50, so all you’ll need to do to decorate your home is to click a few times, and then wait a couple days, and presto! Your furniture will be delivered to your door.
Another similar online retailer is Amazon. They not only offer a large selection of home furnishings, fast and free shipping (if you’re a Prime user), and good customer support, but they also offer a selection of home services so that if you don’t have the time to assemble your delivery, you can have someone pop by and set it all up for you. What a great time and age to be alive!
Bargaining and Swapping
Finally, if you want to find some of the best very deals, or you like to bargain and trade, there’s now an app for that! Offerup runs a smooth platform that allows you to buy and sell whatever you want, in and around Austin, but they also encourage offers and bargaining. The concept is similar to Craigslist, but Offerup seems to weed out more of the scammers, business advertisers, and the unknown by making it more of a direct digital medium to find deals and buy second hand stuff. Of course, Craigslist still remains an option, and their selection is generally much broader as more people use it. But between these two, you should be able to find some great deals. This is another local option, but is one that takes a bit more time and effort on your part in having to watch what comes up and to arrange the details of buying and selling, and then picking up etc. However, if you’re the kind of person who loves hunting for great deals and unique pieces, this is arguably one of the best ways to go about it!
Decorating an apartment takes time, planning, and some budgeting. But it doesn’t have to be harder than it should. Like you, we love finding deals, and we also love making our homes look great. But we also love finding and getting you into that perfect apartment in the first place!
